Complete easyJet pilot recruitment guide. Entry requirements for cadets, First Officers, and Captains. AON tests, assessment center, simulator check, salary (£57k-£166k), and 5/4/5/3 roster explained.

easyJet Pilot Application Guide 2026: Requirements, Assessment & Salary

easyJet is Europe's second-largest low-cost carrier, operating 300+ Airbus A320 family aircraft across 30 bases. In 2025-2026, the airline is actively recruiting across all pathways: MPL cadets, Direct Entry First Officers (type-rated and non-type-rated), Direct Entry Captains, and—crucially—a new "Low Hour" stream for modular pilots. This guide covers every stage of the recruitment process.

Entry Requirements by Pathway

easyJet operates four distinct recruitment pathways, each with specific requirements. The "Low Hour" stream (opened 2024) is particularly significant for modular-trained pilots who were previously excluded from major carrier recruitment.

Generation easyJet Cadet (MPL)

The MPL (Multi-Crew Pilot License) program, run in partnership with CAE, is the primary ab-initio route. Training cost is approximately £100,000+ (self-funded). Requirements: Age 18+ by course start, 5 GCSEs Grade C/4+ (Maths, Science, English required), minimum height 157cm, UK CAA or EASA Class 1 Medical, right to work in UK/EU/EEA/Switzerland (no visa sponsorship for cadets).

Direct Entry First Officer (DEFO)

Stream Hours Required Key Requirement
Type Rated (A320) 500 hours on type Must be currently operating on A320
Non-Type Rated 1,000 total hours 500 hours on aircraft >10 tonnes MTOW

The 10-Tonne Filter: The >10T MTOW requirement targets multi-crew experience on regional turboprops (Dash 8, ATR 72) or business jets. It excludes light twins and single-engine instructional flying, ensuring candidates have airline SOP exposure.

Direct Entry Captain (DEC)

Stream Total Hours PIC Requirement
Type Rated (A320) 4,000 hours 1,000 PIC on A320
Non-Type Rated 4,000 hours 1,000 PIC on jets >30 tonnes MTOW

Low Hour Stream (Second Officer)

A major development for 2024-2026: easyJet now accepts modular-trained pilots without airline cadetship backing. This "white tail" pathway addresses the post-pandemic cadet shortage.

All requirements mandatory: Valid UK CAA CPL and Instrument Rating, training completed after December 31, 2021, APS MCC (Airline Pilot Standards—stricter than generic MCC), A-UPRT (Advanced Upset Prevention & Recovery Training), maximum 5 ATPL exam resits total, maximum 20 hours remedial flight training during CPL/IR.

The "5 Resits" Rule: easyJet enforces a hard limit on ATPL exam resits. Historical data shows first-time passes correlate with ability to absorb the rapid information flow of A320 Type Rating. More than 5 resits = automatic rejection.

Application Process

The easyJet application portal uses an ATS (Applicant Tracking System) that automatically filters applications before human review. Understanding the digital workflow is essential.

Step Stage Details
1 Profile Registration Create account at careers.easyjet.com
2 Document Upload CV, cover letter, passport, license, Medical, logbook pages
3 ATS Knockout Screening Automated scan for Right to Work, Medical, criminal record
4 AON Assessment Invite Online tests within 48 hours of passing ATS
5 Assessment Center Group exercises + competency interview (Gatwick/Luton)
6 Simulator Check A320 FFS, 45-60 min PF + 45-60 min PM (Direct Entry only)

CV Optimization for easyJet

easyJet's ATS scans for specific keywords. Integrate their core values naturally: "Safety at our heart," "Challenging cost" (fuel optimization), "Making a difference" (sustainability), "Warm and welcoming" (crew interaction), "Orange Spirit" (passion, energy).

Formatting rules: Single-column layout, standard fonts (Arial, Calibri), use "Airbus A320" not "A320" or "Bus", include exact hours (PIC, Dual, Multi-engine, Sim), no graphics or logos.

AON/Cut-e Aptitude Tests

The AON (formerly Cut-e) online assessment is where many applicants fail. These tests measure cognitive processing speed, not aviation knowledge.

Test Format Measures
Inductive Reasoning Two grids of shapes—identify the rule Pattern recognition
Deductive Reasoning Sudoku-style logic puzzles Analytical problem-solving
Spatial Orientation ND/PFD interpretation Instrument reading, mental rotation
Monitoring Track moving objects in a box Sustained attention
Reaction Speed Press button when shapes match Psychomotor speed
Complex Control Fly object through twisting tunnel Hand-eye coordination

Preparation Strategy: Practice with PilotAptitudeTest, JobTestPrep, or LatestPilotJobs for 2-3 weeks. Goal: condition your brain to the test format so you spend mental bandwidth on problems, not understanding the interface.

Assessment Center

The Assessment Center focuses on Non-Technical Skills (NTS). easyJet screens for "Orange Spirit"—professional rigor + approachability + egalitarian teamwork. The "hero pilot" persona is actively rejected.

Group Exercises

Groups of 6-8 candidates resolve scenarios together. Common scenarios: Survival (rank 15 items), Business Case (allocate £1M to charities), Practical Task (build structure with limited materials). Assessors observe interactions, not results.

What Gets You Hired

  • • Active listening ("As James mentioned...")
  • • Including quiet members
  • • Time management without being bossy
  • • Building on others' ideas

What Gets You Rejected

  • • Silencing others (heavy mark down)
  • • Dominance or dismissing views
  • • "I'll handle it" hero behavior
  • • Aggression or defensiveness

Competency Interview (STAR Method)

Conducted by a pilot and HR rep. Prepare STAR examples for: Motivation ("Why easyJet?"), Resilience ("Tell me about a failure"), Conflict ("Disagreement with a Captain"), Customer Service ("3-hour delay with irate passengers"), Orange Spirit ("When you went the extra mile").

The "Why easyJet?" Trap: Weak answer: "I like Airbus" or "I need a job." Strong answer: "I admire easyJet's balance of cost-efficiency and high-frequency primary airport network. The 5/4/5/3 roster offers stability I value, and the Orange Spirit aligns with my preference for a non-hierarchical flight deck culture."

Simulator Assessment

For Direct Entry candidates, the simulator check is the final technical hurdle. Conducted in an A320 Full Flight Simulator at Gatwick or Milan. Session: 45-60 min as Pilot Flying (PF) + 45-60 min as Pilot Monitoring (PM).

Standard profile: Take-off (SID from Gatwick/Manchester), general handling (climbs, descents, steep turns), raw data flying (Flight Directors and Autothrust failed—critical test area), non-normal event (engine failure, TCAS RA, hydraulic failure), approach (ILS, often single-engine), landing.

Critical insight: 50% of your grade comes from Pilot Monitoring time. Don't zone out when not flying. If your partner makes a mistake, don't take over—support them: "Speed decaying, check thrust." This demonstrates the flat-gradient CRM culture easyJet values.

Salary & Contract (2026)

easyJet compensation is Basic Salary + Sector Pay + Loyalty Bonus. Variable components add significantly to take-home pay.

Rank Basic Salary Notes
Second Officer £57,235 Flat rate during training/line training
First Officer £60,440 - £67,628 Increases with seniority + sector pay
Senior First Officer £70,000 - £83,020 After ~3,000-4,000 factored hours
Captain £144,597 - £166,286 + performance bonuses + longevity

Tips from Successful Candidates

  1. Practice mental math daily. AON math isn't calculus—it's mental arithmetic under time pressure. Practice fuel uplift (lbs→kgs), descent rates (3×height).
  2. Ace the PM role in sim. 50% of your grade is when you're NOT flying. Support your partner: "Speed decaying, check thrust."
  3. Know the business, not just the plane. Talk about easyJet Holidays, Southend expansion, Net Zero 2050, single-engine taxi.
  4. Dress the part. Full business attire for all interviews—suit and tie. The "Orange Spirit" is casual, but the interview is formal.
  5. Be radically honest about failures. "I forgot to set the QNH. I realized at 1000ft, executed a go-around, reported it via ASR." This shows mature safety culture.
