Lufthansa Aviation Training's European Flight Academy (EFA) is the "Gold Standard" of European cadet programs. It's also the most expensive — €120,000 for the German track, CHF 140,000 for SWISS. But no other program offers the Take-off Promise: a 50% tuition refund if you don't get a job offer within 24 months.
The 2025-2026 cycle brings Brain Capital ISA financing (€10K upfront), SWISS zero-upfront from June 2025, but also a Rostock instructor shortage causing training delays. This audit covers the real numbers.

School Overview
EFA is the internal pilot factory for the Lufthansa Group — 14+ airlines including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines, Lufthansa CityLine, Lufthansa Cargo, Air Dolomiti, Edelweiss, ITA Airways, SunExpress, and AeroLogic.
The Group needs 2,000+ new pilots by end of 2025 under the "Flybig" recruitment campaign. EFA aims for 80-90 cadets per integrated course cycle, with multiple cycles running concurrently across Bremen and Zurich theory centers.
The Take-off Promise
If you don't receive a concrete cockpit position offer from a Lufthansa Group airline within 24 months of licensing, you get 50% of training costs reimbursed. ~95% of graduates receive conditional job offers. No other major European program offers comparable financial security.

Rostock Instructor Shortage (2025-2026)
The relocation from Bremen to Rostock-Laage caused significant disruption. Many senior instructors refused to relocate. Facility targets 100 students/month but staffs ~40. Training delays of weeks are reported — every month adds ~€800-€1,000 in unplanned accommodation costs.

Brain Capital ISA (Germany Track)
Lufthansa Group invested in Brain Capital's aviation education fund. This income share agreement (ISA) replaces traditional bank loans. You pay €10,000 upfront. Brain Capital covers the remaining €110,000.
Repayment begins only after you're employed as a pilot, at a percentage of your salary. If you never work as a pilot, you never repay the full amount. Risk is shared between you and the investors.
SWISS Zero-Upfront (Switzerland Track)
From June 2025, SWISS removed the personal contribution requirement entirely — CHF 0 upfront. SWISS provides a loan covering CHF 140,000 tuition. Swiss citizens receive ~CHF 60,000 VFAL federal subsidies, deducted from total debt. Repayment: ~CHF 1,000/month over ~8 years post-employment.

Airline Pathways
Graduation doesn't guarantee Lufthansa Mainline. You enter the "Ready Entry Pool" and Group airlines draw from this pool based on operational needs. EFA graduates have contractual priority over external candidates.
For 2026 graduates, the realistic first assignment is Lufthansa City Airlines, Discover Airlines, or Eurowings — not Lufthansa Mainline. A tenure at City/Discover may be required before progression.
Starting FO Salary by Airline (2026)
| Airline | Starting FO (Gross) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lufthansa City Airlines | ~€60,000 | New contract, hiring aggressively. A319/A320neo/A220 |
| Discover Airlines | €54,000-€65,000 | Leisure routes, rising with tenure |
| Eurowings (DE) | ~€60,000 | Collective agreement settled 2024 |
| Lufthansa Mainline | >€70,000 | Restricted access. 18% pay rise (VC deal) |
| SWISS | CHF 80,000+ | Swiss track only. Higher CoL offset |
Salary & Career Ladder
Captain salaries across the Group: short-haul €170,000-€200,000, long-haul A350/B747 €220,000-€285,000. Progression from City/Discover to Mainline is possible through internal transfers.
EFA's EASA license also qualifies graduates for positions outside the Group — Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air, and international carriers. The LAT training certificate is recognized worldwide.
