The UK has exactly four AeMC locations capable of issuing initial Class 1 Medical Certificates, operated by three separate organizations. Prices range from £1,181 to £1,414 including VAT — making the UK the second most expensive country in Europe for a Class 1 medical, behind only Sweden (€1,901).
Since Brexit, UK pilots targeting EU airlines need both UK CAA and EASA certificates. All four UK AeMCs now offer dual issuance — but the pricing structures differ. This guide compares every UK option with verified 2025–2026 prices.

UK Aeromedical Centres — Live Data
Birmingham AeMC
London AeMC (Centreline)
Gatwick AeMC (Centreline)
Heathrow Medical Services
Unlike Spain (14 AeMCs) or Germany (7), the UK has minimal competition. Three companies operate four locations, all in southern/central England. Pilots in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland face additional travel time.
Centreline Aviation Medical
2 locations: London (Wimpole St) + Gatwick (Horley). Same company, same prices.
Heathrow Medical Services
1 location: Longford (near Heathrow). CQC inspected, ISO 9001, SEQOHS accredited.
Birmingham AeMC
1 location: Birmingham Airport. Operated by Aeromedical Consulting UK Ltd.
No Other Options
For UK CAA initials, these 4 locations are it. AMEs can only do renewals.

AeMC Profiles
Centreline Aviation Medical — London & Gatwick
The only UK organization with two locations. London AeMC is at 22 Upper Wimpole Street (Harley Street area), Gatwick AeMC at 35 Massetts Road, Horley. Same pricing at both. Online booking available. 5-day lead time.
Multi-authority capability: Besides UK CAA and EASA, Centreline can issue for FAA, Ireland (IAA), Denmark, Malta, and Austro Control. Useful for pilots who need certificates across multiple regulatory frameworks.
Flight school partnerships: Works with L3Harris / Airline Academy.
Notable: The cheapest UK initial at £1,181 inc VAT and the cheapest renewal at £297. However, pilot reviews are polarized — see the reviews section below.
Heathrow Medical Services
Located near Heathrow Airport at Weekly House, Longford. The most heavily accredited UK AeMC — CQC inspected, SEQOHS accredited, and ISO 9001 certified. Also accredited for FAA, CASA (Australia), CAME (Canada), Mauritius, and Saudi Arabia medicals.
Exam duration: Approximately 4 hours. Same-day certificate issuance is standard.
Flight school partnerships: Works with Leading Edge Aviation.
Notable: Best PPRuNe reputation of the three organizations. Higher price but the most consistently positive pilot feedback.
Birmingham AeMC
Located at Birmingham Airport (Forward House, Cargo Terminal). Operated by Aeromedical Consulting UK Ltd. Online booking. 7-day lead time. Same-day certificate issuance.
UK CAA + EASA authority. Dual initial at £1,398 ex VAT — the most expensive dual option.
Notable: The only AeMC outside the London/Heathrow corridor. Best option for pilots in the Midlands, North England, Wales, or anyone who wants to avoid London traffic. Good reviews.
UK CAA vs EASA: Which Do You Need?
Since January 1, 2021, the UK CAA and EASA operate independently. There is no mutual recognition. A UK medical carries zero EASA validity, and vice versa.
| You Need | If You Fly For |
|---|---|
| UK CAA only | British Airways, easyJet (UK ops), Jet2, TUI, Loganair, or any UK-registered operator |
| EASA only | Ryanair (Irish licence), Wizz Air, Vueling, Norwegian, or any EASA-state operator |
| Both (dual) | Keeping both options open, or currently flying for both UK and EASA operators |
If You Only Need EASA
You do not need a UK AeMC at all. Any EASA-state AeMC can issue your certificate. A flight to Riga (€180 medical + €80 flights = €260 total) costs less than a quarter of a UK AeMC. See our cheapest EASA medicals ranking.
Dual UK + EASA Medical Pricing
All three UK AeMC organizations now hold authorization from EASA member state authorities (typically Austro Control or Transport Malta) to issue EASA certificates alongside UK CAA ones. The examination is conducted once — results are submitted to both authorities.
| AeMC | UK Only (ex VAT) | Dual UK+EASA (ex VAT) | EASA Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Centreline | £984 | £1,350 | +£366 |
| Birmingham | £998 | £1,398 | +£400 |
| Heathrow Medical | ~£880–950* | ~£1,377* | ~£430–500 |
*Heathrow pricing estimated. Contact directly for current rates.
The EASA premium (£366–500 extra) is essentially an admin fee for submitting paperwork to a second authority. If you need both certificates, doing them simultaneously saves a separate trip to an EASA-state AeMC.
What Pilots Say (PPRuNe Sentiment)
PPRuNe (Professional Pilots Rumour Network) is the primary forum where UK pilots share AeMC experiences. Here's a summary of recurring themes from 2023–2025 threads.
Heathrow Medical Services — Mostly Positive
Pilots consistently praise the professional staff and straightforward process. Same-day certificate issuance is reliable. Multiple pilots describe the experience as "easy and straightforward."
Criticisms: Slow email responses. Some concerns about specific specialist referral partners. Pricing not published transparently on website.
Centreline (London) — Strongly Polarized
The most discussed and most divisive UK AeMC. Positive reviews cite "excellent" service and helpful admin. Negative reviews describe long waits (up to 5 hours reported), unfriendly reception at the London branch, and recurring ECG issues that trigger expensive cardiology referrals.
Key concern: Multiple pilots report that "random ECG errors seem rife which require an additional £120+ to check over." Also reports of admin failures — medical reports not uploaded to CAA on time. Gatwick branch reviewed more favorably than London.
Birmingham AeMC — Quietly Good
Fewer reviews overall (smaller operation), but those that exist are generally positive. Valued by Midlands-based pilots who appreciate avoiding London. No significant recurring complaints in recent threads.
Centreline Gatwick — Better Than London
Same company and pricing as London, but Gatwick-specific reviews are notably more positive. "Staff at their Gatwick branch were much more helpful" is a representative comment. If choosing Centreline, Gatwick appears to be the better experience.
Is It Cheaper to Go Abroad?
For EASA-only medicals: almost always yes. For UK CAA: not possible — UK CAA initials must be at a UK AeMC. Here's the math for EASA-only.
| Option | Medical | Travel | Total | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK AeMC (EASA only) | ~£1,200 | £0 | ~£1,200 | — |
| Sofia, Bulgaria | €150 | £100–140 | ~£260–300 | ~£900 |
| Riga, Latvia | €415 | £80–120 | ~£475–515 | ~£685 |
| Prague, Czech Rep. | €220 | £60–100 | ~£260–310 | ~£890 |
Verdict: £900 Savings Are Real
If you only need EASA (Ryanair, Wizz Air cadets, EU airline targets), going abroad saves approximately £900 on the initial. Over a 30-year career with annual renewals abroad (€88–150 vs £297–332), the total lifetime saving exceeds £8,000.
Which AeMC Should You Choose?
Best Overall Experience
Heathrow Medical Services. Highest accreditation, most positive reviews, same-day certificate. Worth the premium if you want the smoothest process and are near London.
Cheapest UK Option
Centreline Gatwick. £1,181 inc VAT — lowest UK price. Choose Gatwick over London for a better reported experience. Best if budget is the priority and you're in the southeast.
Outside London
Birmingham AeMC. Only option outside the M25 corridor. Good reviews. Sensible choice for anyone in the Midlands, North, Wales, or Scotland.
