France's flight training market in 2026 is defined by one collapse and three powerhouses. Airways Aviation ESMA (Montpellier) was liquidated in January 2026 after an arson attack destroyed its DA42 fleet — 217 students displaced.
The surviving market is split between state-backed excellence (ENAC: free EPL programme, ~30 cadets/year, direct Air France pipeline), the manufacturer model (Airbus Flight Academy: €95,000, Angoulême, Volotea recruitment), and the airline-integrated model (Astonfly: €95,000, Paris, exclusive Ryanair Future Flyer partner). EPAG NG in Merville offers the cheapest private integrated ATPL at €66,000 with historical Air France connections.
Air France is recruiting ~300 pilots in 2025/2026. The "Paris premium" adds €15,000–€20,000 in living costs versus provincial locations. See our European training cost comparison for how France ranks against 14 other countries.

Airways Aviation ESMA: What Happened
Airways Aviation Academy (ESMA) — Liquidated January 23, 2026
The Airways Aviation facility at Montpellier was targeted in an arson attack on May 20, 2025. Three Diamond DA42 aircraft destroyed, ten damaged. Without its multi-engine fleet, the school could not deliver advanced ATPL phases. Judicial liquidation followed on January 23, 2026. ~217 students displaced. The group is pursuing legal action against the airport for security failures. Do NOT engage with any cached enrollment forms. If you are an affected student, contact SNPL (French pilot union) for transfer assistance.

School Profiles
ENAC — The Free State-Funded Elite (Toulouse)
Free (EPL programme) — the French government covers training costs estimated at over €100,000 per cadet. The Élève Pilote de Ligne (EPL) programme is unique globally: a meritocratic, state-funded pathway where financial background is irrelevant. ~30 places per year via the Concours EPL/S (requires strong maths/physics, typically Maths Sup/Spé).
Selection gauntlet: PSY 0 (online logic + English), PSY 1 (psycho-technical, Toulouse campus), PSY 2 (personality + group exercises). Air France's primary training ground — graduates feed directly into the national carrier and Transavia. Modern glass-cockpit fleet at Toulouse and Muret satellite bases. If you qualify, there is no better deal in European aviation training.
Airbus Flight Academy Europe — Manufacturer Standard (Angoulême)
€95,000 integrated ATPL. "Manufacturer Standards" — curriculum designed around Airbus cockpit philosophy, introducing fly-by-wire concepts and automation management earlier than traditional syllabi. Diamond DA40/DA42 fleet with Garmin G1000. Volotea partnership: cadets recruited directly for the A320 fleet. Also partnered with Sevenair Academy (Portugal) for broader European strategy.
Angoulême location saves €15,000–€20,000 in living costs versus Paris. Backed by Airbus — strongest financial stability guarantee of any private French ATO. The premium choice for students targeting Airbus operators.
Post-ESMA: Financial Stability Matters
The Airways Aviation collapse proves that longevity doesn't guarantee solvency. In 2026, prioritize schools backed by a state (ENAC), a manufacturer (Airbus), or a major airline (Astonfly/Ryanair). Independent schools without institutional backing carry higher risk. Always verify the financial health of your ATO before enrolling.

Astonfly — Ryanair's French Partner (Paris)
€95,000 integrated ATPL. Exclusive French partner for the Ryanair Future Flyer Academy. Conditional job offer as Second Officer on Boeing 737. Curriculum tailored to Ryanair SOPs with heavy CRM and English focus. Based at Toussus-le-Noble (southwest of Paris).
BNP Paribas financing: preferential rates (~1.99%), up to 36 months deferred repayment — start paying after you're employed. The trade-off: Paris location means the highest living costs in France (€1,400–€1,750/month). Total real cost reaches €128,000–€137,000. Best for students who want the Ryanair pipeline and can manage Paris expenses.
EPAG NG — Cheapest Integrated (Merville, Nord)
~€66,000 integrated ATPL — the lowest price for a private integrated programme in France. Historical link to Air France cadet training. Located in Merville (Nord-Pas-de-Calais) — significantly lower living costs than Paris or Toulouse. Campus environment with accommodation available.
Strong for students who want a French integrated ATPL without the €95,000 price tag. Trade-off: northern location with less favourable weather than southern France.
Aéropyrénées — Southern Regional (Perpignan)
~€85,000 integrated ATPL. Perpignan and Toussus-le-Noble bases. Southern France location: excellent weather for rapid hour-building and minimal VFR delays. More personalized "club-like" atmosphere versus the industrial scale of Astonfly or Airbus.
Diverse modular and integrated programmes. Strong modular options with lower total cost — good for students pacing their expenditure.
Hub'Air — FAA/EASA Dual (Cannes/Nîmes)
~€82,000 integrated ATPL. Côte d'Azur location. Offers FAA/EASA dual licensing pathway with US-based training components — useful for pilots targeting both markets. South of France weather advantage.
Supporting Institutions
Avialpes (Annecy): boutique Alpine school. Mountain flying in the French Alps builds exceptional handling and meteorological awareness. Cessna G1000, specialized UPRT. Modular only.
Institut Mermoz: the leader in ATPL distance learning theory — updated question banks aligned with EASA ECQB. Not a full ATO (theory provider), but used by modular students across France for the 14 ATPL exams.
Aero Club de France network: cheapest PPL pathway in Europe (€6,000–€9,000 at aeroclubs) — France has the largest aeroclub network on the continent.
Real Costs: The Paris Premium
Total Cost of Ownership — France 2026 (24 months)
ENAC EPL: tuition free — total cost is living only (€22,800–€30,000 in Toulouse over 24 months). Paris rent: €800–950/month studio. Angoulême: €450–550/month. Merville: ~€400/month. CAF (housing subsidy): €100–250/month for eligible students. Air France cadets earn 80–100% of SMIC during training.

Air France Selection: The PSY 0/1/2 Process
PSY 0: online logic, reasoning, English — three failures = permanent exclusion. PSY 1: day-long psycho-technical battery at Toulouse (spatial orientation, multitasking, psychomotor speed). PSY 2: group problem-solving, individual interviews with psychologists and active pilots — assesses non-technical skills, leadership, CRM. This same process applies to both ENAC EPL and Air France Cadet entry. Start preparing early.

Decision Guide
ENAC EPL (free) if: you can pass the Concours. Mathematics/physics background. French or EU national. If accepted, this is the single best deal in all of European pilot training — free tuition + Air France career track.
Airbus Flight Academy (€95k) if: you want the safest private investment. Manufacturer-backed, Volotea pipeline, Angoulême saves €15–20k vs Paris. Best for A320 career targeting.
Astonfly (€95k) if: Ryanair 737 career is the goal. Conditional job offer. BNP financing makes Paris manageable. Accept the €129k+ total cost.
EPAG NG (€66k) if: budget matters and you want to stay in France. Cheapest private integrated ATPL. Accept the northern location trade-off.
Choose Spain/Poland instead if: total cost must be below €90,000 (Poland: €67–88k total). Weather must be guaranteed 300+ days (southern Spain). All-inclusive campus lifestyle (FTEJerez/FlyBy). France's value is in its institutional pipelines, not in cost competitiveness.
