Entry Routes to Wizz Air
Wizz Air recruits across the full experience spectrum — from ab-initio cadets with zero flight time to experienced Captains. You apply via a single portal (careers.wizzair.com) and select your AOC (Wizz Air Hungary or Wizz Air Malta) based on your preferred base and roster.
Cadet Programs
WAPA (Wizz Air Pilot Academy): Ab-initio — zero to FO. Training at Tréner (Nyíregyháza, Hungary) or Egnatia. €13,950 upfront, rest pre-financed.
She Can Fly: Same as WAPA with reduced initial fee of €800 for female cadets.
Whitetail / Partner routes: CPL/IR holders via Leading Edge (UK) or other approved ATOs. Non-WAPA graduates accepted but WAPA cadets get priority.
Direct Entry
First Officer (Type Rated): Current A320 type rating with 500 hours on type.
First Officer (Non-Type Rated): 1,500 hours on certified MPA jet >50T MTOW in public CAT operations (excludes corporate/business aviation).
Captain: 3,000 hours actual flight time + 100 landings on Airbus FBW types (A320/A330/A340/A350/A380), plus factorized hour minimums.
No training cost for direct entry — standard employment contract with sign-on bonus available.
Wizz Air operates under two AOCs: Wizz Air Hungary and Wizz Air Malta. Your AOC choice determines available bases, roster patterns, and contract terms. Select carefully during application — it affects where you live and fly.
Minimum Requirements
WAPA Cadet Requirements
Right to work: Unrestricted right to live and work in an EU country with a Wizz Air base (Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Georgia, Hungary, Moldova, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia).
Age: Minimum 18 at time of application.
Height: 160–190cm (based on Airbus CS 25.777 cockpit design).
Education: Secondary school diploma (equivalent to GCSE/Matura).
English: Proficiency sufficient for aviation training (tested at Stage 1).
Medical: EASA Class 1 medical — not required at application, but must be obtained before course enrolment.
Criminal record: Clean — required before enrolment (not at assessment).
Guarantor: A surety (typically family member) required to co-sign a suretyship agreement, notarised in their country of residence.
Direct Entry First Officer Requirements
Type Rated FO: Valid A320 type rating, 500 hours on type, currently operating in a Part-CAT environment.
Non-Type Rated FO: 1,500 hours on certified multi-pilot aircraft (jet/fan) with MTOW >50 tonnes, in public CAT operations. Excludes corporate/business aviation.
Licence: Valid EASA ATPL or equivalent (with EASA validation).
Medical: Valid EASA Class 1 medical certificate.
English: ICAO Level 4 minimum.
Direct Entry Captain Requirements
Total time: Minimum 3,000 hours actual flight time.
Airbus FBW time: 100 landings on A320/A330/A340/A350/A380 (in combination).
PIC time: PIC hours — does NOT include PICUS.
Factorization: Hours are weighted by aircraft type using Wizz Air's factorization table. Your factorized total must meet the minimum threshold.
Exclusions: Simulator hours excluded from all calculations.
For Captain applications, PICUS hours do NOT count as PIC. This catches out candidates who assume PICUS = PIC. Check your logbook carefully before applying — Wizz Air will verify during the assessment.
Factorization (Captain Applications)
Unlike most European airlines, Wizz Air uses a factorization system for Captain applications. Your flight hours on different aircraft types are multiplied by specific factors, and the sum determines whether you meet the minimum. Hours on large multi-crew jets receive the highest factor; hours on single-engine piston receive the lowest.
Where to find factors: The official factorization table is published at onedoor.wizzair.com, referenced on every Wizz Air Captain job posting.
What counts: Only actual flight time. Simulator hours are excluded.
How it works: Each hour category (e.g., multi-crew jet PIC, single-crew turboprop PIC) is multiplied by its factor. All factorized totals are summed. This sum must meet the published minimum.
For a detailed explanation of how factorization works and how to present your hours correctly, see our Wizz Air Factorization Guide.
Key difference from Ryanair: Ryanair uses actual hours without factorization — 1,000 hours on multi-crew jet >30,000kg MTOW means exactly that. Wizz Air's system allows hours from lighter aircraft to contribute toward the Captain threshold, but at reduced weight. If you're comparing offers, see our Ryanair application guide.
Application Process Overview
Step 1 — Online Application: Create profile at careers.wizzair.com. Select AOC (Hungary or Malta). Upload CV, enter logbook hours via the Pilot Scoring Form. All fields mandatory.
Step 2 — Pre-screening: Wizz Air recruitment team reviews your profile against minimum requirements. If eligible, you receive an invitation to the assessment.
Step 3 — Recruitment Fee: Pay €130 (non-refundable) covering the TestAir 360 aptitude test. For WAPA cadets, this includes practice modules.
Step 4 — Online Assessment (Stages 1–2): TestAir 360 aptitude test + psychological assessment. Completed remotely within the given timeframe.
Step 5 — Budapest Assessment (Stages 3–4): In-person at Wizz Air Training Centre. Group exercise, HR/technical interview, simulator, psychometric evaluation.

Build Your CV — €19.90Online Assessment (TestAir 360)
After paying the €130 recruitment fee, you have two months to complete the online assessment. For WAPA cadets, the TestAir 360 platform includes 4 practice sessions before the final supervised "Pro" test. Each practice lasts 60 minutes and can be completed from home.
| Test | What It Measures | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pilot Aptitude (COMPASS) | Hand-eye coordination, multitasking, spatial awareness | Core test — highest elimination rate |
| ATPL / Technical Knowledge | All 13 ATPL subjects + maths + Wizz Air company questions | 60 questions (experienced candidates) |
| Reasoning Tests | Numerical, verbal, and logical reasoning | Timed — speed matters |
| English Test | Aviation English proficiency | Cadets only |
| Physics & Maths | Basic physics, long division, ratios | Cadets only — not in practice modules |
| Personality Profile (CPP) | Psychological assessment — competency mapping | ~300 questions, answer honestly |
"The 60-question test halved our group. 3–5 Wizz Air company questions, 5–10 maths questions with long division and ratios, then the rest were ATPL questions covering all 13 subjects. Very hard to study for because the topics are so broad." — Candidate report, Budapest assessment, 2025
Budapest Assessment (2 Days)
If you pass the online stages, you receive an invitation to the in-person assessment at the Wizz Air Training Centre in Budapest. Candidates arrange their own travel and accommodation. Wizz Air provides flights and hotel only for experienced Captain and type-rated FO candidates (Wizz Air Hungary: Budapest; Wizz Air Malta: Rome).
Day 1
Computer-Based Test: ~1.5 hours. ATPL knowledge, maths, Wizz Air company questions, reasoning. Eliminates ~50% of candidates.
Group Exercise: ~30 minutes. Team task with other candidates — communication, decision-making, cooperation. Not enough time and not enough information is given deliberately to test how you handle pressure.
HR & Technical Interview: 30–45 minutes. Panel with 2 pilots. Base preference, motivation, A320 knowledge (scaled to your experience level), ATPL questions.
Day 2
Simulator Assessment: 40–60 minutes in an A320 Level D full flight simulator. Evaluates handling, CRM, and trainability.
Psychometric & Psychological Evaluation: ~3 hours. CPP test (~300 questions) + individual meeting with an aviation psychologist. Computer test followed by in-depth discussion.
"For the group exercise, you are not given enough time and not enough information. They just want to see your communication. Pretty easy if you are a good team player." — Candidate report, Wizz Air Budapest, 2024
Simulator Assessment
The simulator session uses an Airbus A320 Level D full flight simulator at the Wizz Air Training Centre in Budapest. Duration is 40–60 minutes. The assessment evaluates raw handling ability, standard procedures, and — most importantly — CRM and trainability.
What They're Looking For
CRM skills: Communication, workload sharing, supporting your sim partner. This is the primary assessment criterion.
Basic handling: Fly-by-wire basics — side-stick, autothrust, flight directors. Cadets are not expected to know the A320.
Standard procedures: Briefings, callouts, checklist discipline.
Trainability: How you respond to feedback and adapt during the session. Assessors watch your learning curve.
Stress management: Engine failures, go-arounds, and unusual attitudes are common assessment scenarios.
Candidate tip: "It is very important to pay for a few hours in an Airbus sim if you are a cadet, especially if you have not flown fly-by-wire before. Even if you completed your MCC in Airbus, go and take 2–3 hours before the assessment." — Successful candidate, Budapest, 2025

Technical Interview
Conducted by two Wizz Air pilots. Technical depth is calibrated to your experience — cadets are tested on their training aircraft and basic ATPL theory, while experienced candidates face A320 systems, performance, and operational scenarios. Common areas: Principles of Flight, Meteorology, General Navigation, Operational Procedures.
HR / Competency Interview
Combined with the technical portion in the same panel. Behavioral questions explore motivation, teamwork, base flexibility, and company knowledge.
Commonly reported questions:
Why Wizz Air? / What do you know about the company?
What base do you prefer and why?
What do you know about the A320?
Describe a time you worked effectively in a team.
How do you handle disagreements with a captain?
What would you do if you witnessed a safety concern?
Do you have any questions for us?
"They asked: base preference, why Wizz Air, what do you know about the A320, ATPL questions, then the interview ended with 'Do you have any questions for us?' Have something intelligent ready — ask about fleet expansion or new bases." — Forum report, Wizz Air FO candidate, 2024
How to Prepare
For Online Tests
Use the TestAir 360 practice modules — they are specifically designed for the Wizz Air test and include 4 home practice sessions. Brush up on ATPL theory across all 13 subjects. Practice mental maths — long division, ratios, percentages. Learn 3–5 facts about Wizz Air (fleet size, CEO, base count, "Wizz 500" strategy).
For Simulator
Book 2–3 hours in an A320 simulator before the assessment — especially if you haven't flown fly-by-wire. Practice standard callouts, briefings, and CRM procedures. Focus on communication with your sim partner, not perfection. They assess trainability, not A320 mastery.
For Interviews
Research Wizz Air: fleet expansion plans, new bases, AOC structure (Hungary vs Malta), A320 family basics. Prepare STAR examples for teamwork, pressure, and disagreement questions. Have a genuine reason for choosing Wizz Air over competitors. Know which base you want and why.
Salary and Contract
| Position | Total Estimate (EU) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Second Officer (WAPA) | €42,000–€50,000 | Minus €520–€1,000/mo deferred tuition |
| First Officer | €55,000–€100,000 | Retention bonus up to €25,000 (3-year) |
| Captain | €108,000–€210,000 | UK Captains highest gross. Retention bonus up to €40,000 |
Wizz Air uses a distance-based pay model — 50–60% of total earnings come from variable distance and sector pay. Longer A321neo routes earn significantly more than short A320 hops. Eastern European bases (Budapest, Bucharest, Gdansk) offer the best purchasing power, while UK-based Captains earn the highest gross at £200K+. Contracts are indefinite (permanent) for all positions. For the full breakdown, see our Wizz Air Pilot Salary Guide 2026.
WAPA cadets: budget a €3,000–€5,000 contingency for the 2–4 month gap between graduation and type rating slot. During this holding pool period you have no salary. The GTF engine crisis has extended wait times in 2025–2026.
