Turkish Airlines (THY) is the flag carrier of Turkey and the airline that flies to more countries than any other carrier in the world. Based at Istanbul Airport (IST) — one of the world's largest hub airports — Turkish Airlines operates a massive fleet spanning the A320/A321 family, A330, A350-900, Boeing 737 MAX, Boeing 777-300ER, and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The airline is a founding member of the Star Alliance and serves over 340 destinations across 130+ countries.

Turkish Airlines recruits both cadet pilots through the Take-Off programme (500–800 per year) and experienced direct-entry pilots internationally. The selection process is uniquely structured — rather than a single assessment day, it follows a sequential five-stage process spread across approximately six months, with each stage as a filter. The process places heavy emphasis on psychometric testing and CRM competencies, reflecting the airline's investment in human factors and operational safety. Here is what each stage involves.

1

Online Application & English Exam

Career portal submission — English test for candidates without valid certificate

2

PACE Psychometric Test

9 modules — math, physics, spatial, memory, psychomotor, multi-tasking, coordination

3

CRM Competency Assessment

Group tasks, behavioral evaluation — communication, leadership, team harmony

4

HR & Technical Interview

Panel with HR and technical department — document review, height/weight check

5

Medical Examination

Class 1 aviation medical at approved hospital — full physical and mental assessment

For experienced direct-entry pilots (expatriate or Turkish national), the process is condensed into approximately 3 days in Istanbul (Monday–Wednesday), with all travel and accommodation covered by Turkish Airlines. The screening process includes document and licence verification, a simulator assessment, and a medical check. Contact from the airline typically comes within 1–3 weeks after completing the assessment.

Stage 1: Online Application & English Exam

Istanbul ~1 hour Medium English proficiency exam

Applications are submitted through the Turkish Airlines career portal. The airline publishes recruitment notices for cadet pilot candidates annually and posts experienced pilot vacancies as fleet demand requires. The application requires licence details, flight hours, qualifications, and supporting documents.

Candidates who do not provide a valid English language certificate (ICAO Level 4 or above, or equivalent) during application are invited to take an English exam, conducted face-to-face on computers at a Turkish Airlines facility. The English test assesses communication proficiency sufficient for multi-crew operations and ATC interaction. Candidates who already hold a valid language certificate skip this stage.

After passing the English requirement, successful candidates receive an invitation to the PACE test. Turkish Airlines communicates all stage invitations via SMS and email. The recruitment notice typically specifies eligibility criteria — for cadets, this includes age requirements, minimum educational qualifications, height/weight limits, and absence of recent CAA ATPL exam attempts (19-month cooling-off period).

"The application process started online through the career portal. The first stage was an English exam — face-to-face on computers. After that, we moved to the DLR test (now PACE) for psychomotor skills. At each stage, you only advance if you pass." — Turkish Airlines Blog, cadet pilot interview, 2026

Stage 2: PACE Psychometric Test

Istanbul (THY HQ) Full day High ~50% filtered PACE computer-based

The PACE test is the current psychometric evaluation at Turkish Airlines, replacing the former DLR (German Aviation Institute) test. It consists of 9 modules completed in four timed sections with 10-minute breaks between each section. Candidates receive a preparation link at least 3 weeks before the exam date.

The mathematics module includes 30 multiple-choice questions (30 minutes) covering basic operations, numerical reasoning, and problem-solving. The physics module is a similar format — 30 questions (30 minutes) on mechanics, optics, thermodynamics, and general physics. While the testing authority states that candidates who last studied these subjects in high school can manage with 2 weeks of preparation, candidates with technical backgrounds report a significant advantage.

The remaining modules assess spatial orientation, memory and concentration, psychomotor coordination, multi-tasking under time pressure, and hand-eye coordination. These are similar to PILAPT or COMPASS-style aptitude tests used by other carriers. The format involves timed exercises where you simultaneously track instruments, respond to stimuli, and manage workload at increasing difficulty levels.

Candidates who fail the PACE test cannot continue the process for that recruitment cycle and must wait 3–6 months before reapplying, depending on which modules were failed. Meeting all application requirements allows candidates to reapply in the next notice period.

"It's necessary to study for at least two weeks and really take time for the exam. The DLR authority says that after this study period, a person reaches 95% of their capacity in psychomotor and visual/auditory memory tests." — Turkish Airlines Blog, pilot interview with Captain Şaşmaz, 2025

Stage 3: CRM Competency Assessment

Istanbul (THY HQ) ~3 hours High CRM group + individual

Candidates who pass the PACE test proceed to the CRM (Crew Resource Management) competency assessment. This stage measures behavioral competencies and team harmony — the ability to work effectively in a crew environment, communicate clearly, demonstrate leadership, and handle interpersonal dynamics under observation.

The assessment involves group tasks where candidates work together on operational or business scenarios while being individually evaluated by assessors. Unlike a standard group exercise at Western airlines, the Turkish Airlines CRM assessment places particular emphasis on how candidates express themselves — clearly articulating motivations, demonstrating self-awareness, and responding constructively to other group members.

Candidates consistently describe this as the most challenging stage of the Turkish Airlines process. The difficulty is not technical — it is personal. You must answer questions like "Why are you here?" and "Why did you choose this path?" with genuine conviction, not rehearsed scripts. The assessors evaluate not just what you say but how you say it — confidence, authenticity, emotional intelligence, and alignment with Turkish Airlines' culture.

"The CRM part is different — it's about expressing yourself clearly. You have to be ready to answer 'Why are you here?' directly and honestly. Reading alone won't do — I drew on books by captains, interviews, even online posts. The key is to combine what you've learned with your own experience and put it in your own words." — Turkish Airlines Blog, TAFA cadet pilot interview, 2026

Stage 4: HR & Technical Interview

Istanbul (THY HQ) 30–45 min High Panel interview

The HR and technical interview is conducted by representatives from Human Resources and the relevant technical department. The interview covers motivational questions, career history, technical knowledge, leadership qualities, and communication skills. Document review (licence, logbook, qualifications) and a height/weight measurement are also conducted at this stage.

For experienced direct-entry pilots, the technical component includes aircraft systems knowledge relevant to your background, operational procedures, and scenario-based questions testing decision-making. For cadet candidates, the technical questions focus on foundational aviation knowledge, physics, meteorology, and navigation principles.

The panel evaluates not just technical knowledge but cultural fit — Turkish Airlines has a distinct corporate culture with an emphasis on professionalism, respect, and the airline's national identity. Candidates who demonstrate genuine interest in Turkish aviation, the Istanbul hub strategy, and the "Widen Your World" brand philosophy make a stronger impression than those who treat it as just another airline application.

What the panel typically asks:

  • Motivational: "Why Turkish Airlines?" "What does 'Widen Your World' mean to you as a pilot?" "Where do you see your career in 5 years?"
  • Behavioral: "Describe a situation where you had to challenge a senior colleague." "How do you handle stress in the cockpit?" "Give an example of teamwork under pressure."
  • Technical: "What is the Turkish Airlines fleet composition?" "Describe the A350 at THY." "Walk us through a cold weather departure."
  • Company knowledge: "How many destinations does THY serve?" "What is Star Alliance and what does it mean for THY?" "What do you know about Istanbul Airport?"

"When it comes to the panel interview, you're assessed not just on your skills but on how well you fit with the company's culture. By then you've already gone through all the earlier stages and can confidently step in." — Turkish Airlines Blog, TAFA cadet interview, 2026

Stage 5: Medical Examination

Istanbul Variable Low Class 1 medical

The final stage is a comprehensive Class 1 aviation medical examination conducted at an approved medical institution. In Turkey, the SHGM (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) designates specific aviation hospitals and medical examiners. Only examinations from these approved centres are accepted.

The medical begins early morning with blood tests and continues throughout the day as each department conducts its own assessments — cardiovascular (ECG, blood pressure), pulmonary function, audiometry, ophthalmology (including colour vision), ENT, neurology, and a general physical examination. At the end of the day, candidates receive a sealed envelope with their medical report, which is submitted to Turkish Airlines for final assessment by the company's medical team.

The system is rigorous — the aviation medical requirements are stricter than standard employment medicals, covering both physical and mental fitness. Turkish Airlines covers the cost of the medical examination. Upon passing all stages, candidates receive a contract offer, with cadets signing in Istanbul and beginning theoretical training at TAFA or a partner school within days.

"The process begins early in the morning with a blood test and continues all day as each department conducts its checks. At the end you receive a sealed envelope with your medical report. We signed the contract in Istanbul and just two days later began theoretical courses." — Turkish Airlines Blog, TAFA cadet pilot, 2026

Full answer preview — this is what you get

What does 'Widen Your World' mean to you as a pilot?

HR Interview Motivational difficulty 1/3

Operational Interpretation — 'Widen Your World' is THY's brand slogan, but for a pilot it has literal meaning. THY's network of 131 countries means you will operate into airports, airspaces, and weather environments that most European pilots never experience. One rotation might be IST–Erbil with military NOTAMs and restricted zones; the next could be IST–Caracas with oceanic crossing and tropical weather. This diversity forces continuous learning and prevents the operational complacency that can develop on repetitive short-haul routes.

Cultural Bridge — Turkey's geographic position means THY connects cultures that have few direct links. The airline operates humanitarian flights, carries diplomatic cargo, and provides the only scheduled service to some remote destinations. As a pilot, 'widening your world' means understanding that a flight to Mogadishu serves a fundamentally different purpose than a flight to Paris CDG — and approaching both with the same professionalism and the Turkish concept of 'misafirperverlik' (hospitality) that extends from the cabin to the cockpit.

Professional Growth — The slogan also maps to career development. THY's dual-OEM fleet (Airbus + Boeing) across eight types means you can widen your technical world by transitioning between platforms. The 800-aircraft Vision 2033 target means widening into training roles, fleet management, or even operational leadership. Few carriers offer the same breadth of professional paths from a single seniority list.

Tip: Use the Turkish word 'misafirperverlik' (hospitality) in your answer — it signals cultural awareness. Pronounce it: mee-sah-feer-PER-ver-lik. Practice beforehand.

Describe the A350-900 at THY. Why is it called the long-haul future of the airline?

Technical Interview Technical Knowledge difficulty 2/3

Technical Specifications — The Turkish Airlines (THY) A350-900 is powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-84 engines, each producing approximately 84,200 lbf of thrust. The airframe is 53% composite by weight (carbon fibre reinforced polymer), making it significantly lighter than traditional aluminium construction. The wing features a 64.75m span with distinctive curved winglets. Maximum range is approximately 8,100nm, enabling non-stop IST–Sydney or IST–Santiago if demand justified it. THY currently operates approximately 30 A350-900s, with more on order.

You're an FO flying with a captain who has 20 years' experience and a high ego. You notice he made a mistake on approach. What would you do?

HR Interview Situational difficulty 3/3

I Would Use Graduated Assertion — If flying with a captain who has a high ego and 20 years' experience, and I observe a safety issue, I would not be deterred by the authority gradient. Turkey's Hofstede Power Distance score of 66 means hierarchical deference is culturally embedded, but my safety obligation overrides cultural comfort. I would start with an inquiry: "Captain, I want to confirm our cleared altitude — I'm showing FL350." If dismissed, I would escalate: "Captain, I am concerned about our altitude. The clearance is FL350 and we are at FL340." I would follow the two-challenge rule.

What Successful Candidates Say

Based on candidate reports from the Turkish Airlines Blog, Glassdoor, AvioTest, and pilot career forums, here are the patterns that separate successful candidates:

The PACE test requires real preparation — not cramming. The 3-week preparation period is a minimum, not a suggestion. The math and physics modules are manageable for candidates with a technical background, but those who last studied these subjects in high school need consistent daily practice. The psychomotor and multi-tasking modules cannot be "studied" in the traditional sense — they require repetition with practice software to build speed and accuracy. Failed modules result in a 3–6 month waiting period before you can reapply.

The CRM stage is the hidden filter. Most candidates prepare heavily for the PACE test and the technical interview but underestimate the CRM competency assessment. This stage tests your emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and ability to work in a team while being individually observed. The assessors want to see authenticity — real examples from your life and career, not rehearsed scripts. Practise articulating why you want to be a pilot, why Turkish Airlines specifically, and how you handle interpersonal challenges in your own genuine voice.

Know Turkish Airlines beyond the fleet list. THY serves more countries than any other airline — over 130 countries, 340+ destinations. The Istanbul hub is one of the world's largest and most complex. Know what Star Alliance membership means operationally. Know the fleet strategy — A350-900 for the long-haul future, A321neo for growing narrowbody capacity, 787 Dreamliner for route expansion. Know the TAFA training academy in Aydın. The panel interviews reveal whether you've done surface research or genuine investigation.

Expatriate pilots: understand the roster and lifestyle. Turkish Airlines offers expatriate pilots a commuting roster — 3 weeks on, 1 week off — with confirmed tickets for captains. The Expat Relations Department assists with work permits (approximately 4 weeks processing), accommodation guidance, and cultural integration. Turkish citizenship eligibility begins after 5 years. Know these details before the interview — the panel assesses whether you understand the commitment and lifestyle, not just the salary.

"This process took about 6 months and at each stage I had the opportunity to get to know myself better and improve my professional skills. Including the health check, the entire process involves five stages. We signed the contract in Istanbul and began courses immediately." — Glassdoor, Turkish Airlines pilot interview experience, 2025
