A British Airways aircraft takes off somewhere in the world every 90 seconds. The airline operates A320s, A350s, A380s, Boeing 777s, and 787s from Heathrow, Gatwick, and London City — and with 70 long-haul aircraft on order, they need pilots. The catch: "British Airways" is actually three airlines (BA Mainline, BA Euroflyer, BA Cityflyer), and you can only apply to one at a time. Get rejected at the simulator stage and you're frozen out for 12 months across all three. Here's how to make your one shot count.

Entry Routes
BA runs multiple recruitment streams. The headline programme is the Speedbird Pilot Academy — fully funded, zero experience needed, 20,000+ applicants per year. But there are also self-funded ATO pathways, direct entry for experienced pilots, and a military transition scheme.
Cadet Pathways
Speedbird Pilot Academy: Fully funded by BA. 60–200 places/year. Training at Skyborne, L3Harris, Leading Edge, or FTEJerez. 18 months to frozen ATPL + type rating. Graduates join on A320 at Gatwick or Heathrow.
Approved ATO Pathway: Self-funded training (~£100K+) at one of BA's four approved ATOs. Conditional job offer before or upon graduation. Same endpoint: A320 fleet.
Experienced Pathways
Direct Entry (Short-haul): Current or recent A320 type rating. Join BA Mainline (Heathrow) or BA Euroflyer (Gatwick).
Direct Entry (Long-haul): Widebody experience preferred. Long-haul suitability assessed at sim stage. A320 remains the primary recruiting fleet — long-haul positions are limited.
Military Pilot Pathway: For serving or recently separated RAF, RN, Army Air Corps, and Royal Marines pilots. No civilian type rating needed.
You can only apply to one airline within the BA family at a time: BA Mainline, BA Euroflyer, or BA Cityflyer. Failing at the simulator stage freezes you out of all three for 12 months. Choose your application carefully.
BA Mainline, Euroflyer & Cityflyer
Same livery, different operations. Where you apply determines what you fly, where you're based, and what you earn.
| Airline | Fleet | Base | Operations |
|---|---|---|---|
| British Airways | A320, A350, A380, 777, 787 | Heathrow (LHR) | Short-haul + long-haul worldwide |
| BA Euroflyer | A320, A321 | Gatwick (LGW) | Short-haul Europe (~30 destinations) |
| BA Cityflyer | Embraer E190 | London City (LCY) | Short-haul Europe + domestic UK |
BA Euroflyer pilots automatically join the British Airways master seniority list. Cityflyer operates independently with its own seniority. If your long-term goal is to fly widebody long-haul, applying to BA Mainline gives you the clearest path — you start on A320 short-haul and transition to long-haul fleets with seniority.
Requirements
Speedbird Pilot Academy (Fully Funded Cadet)
Age: 17–58 to apply, 18+ to start training.
Education: Six GCSEs grade A–C / 4–9, including Maths, English Language, and a Science (or equivalent). No degree required.
Height: 1.57m–1.90m (5'2"–6'3"). Outside this range may require a functionality check.
Medical: Ability to obtain and hold a UK CAA Class 1 medical with no restrictions, meeting BA-specific medical criteria.
Right to work: Must have right to live and work in the UK.
Flying experience: Not required. BA is explicitly looking for candidates from all backgrounds.
Direct Entry (Experienced Pilots)
Licence: Valid EASA or UK CAA ATPL (or frozen ATPL with all theory exams passed). Current type rating for relevant fleet, or significant multi-crew jet experience.
Medical: Valid Class 1 medical meeting BA criteria.
English: ICAO Level 4 minimum.
Long-haul: Assessed at simulator stage. Limited positions available — A320 short-haul is the primary recruiting fleet. If you don't meet long-haul requirements, you may be offered a short-haul role instead.
Pre-employment: Referencing and background checks must be completed before starting.
Selection Process
BA's selection runs in campaign windows — not continuously like Emirates. When applications open (typically annually for Speedbird, periodically for direct entry), the process moves through fixed stages. The whole pipeline from application to hold pool can take 2–6 months.
Step 1 — Application & Motivation: Online application via careers.ba.com. You'll be asked about your motivation to join British Airways specifically. Speedbird applicants use the Prep & Apply hub.
Step 2 — Video Recording: Record answers to a series of interview questions. Pre-recorded, not live. BA reviews your communication, motivation, and fit.
Step 3 — Online Assessments: Computer-based psychometric tests assessing workload management and performance under pressure. This stage eliminates ~60% of candidates.
Step 4 — Waterside Assessment (Half Day): At BA headquarters near Heathrow. Group exercise + multitasking assessment. Speedbird applicants also have an ATO interview.
Step 5 — Full Assessment Day: Return to Waterside for individual assessment: competency interview (STAR format), technical assessment, A380 simulator check.
Step 6 — Hold Pool: Successful candidates enter the hold pool pending a start date and conditional offer.

Build Your CV — €19.90Online Assessments
The online stage is where most candidates are eliminated. BA uses computer-based tests that specifically measure how you cope with increasing workload — tasks get progressively harder while new demands are added. The tests are designed for pilot-relevant cognitive skills, not general IQ.
Psychometric battery: Numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning, spatial awareness, and abstract pattern recognition.
Flight crew aptitude: Multitasking under time pressure, workload prioritisation, and decision-making with incomplete information.
Personality assessment: Behavioural questionnaire evaluating team orientation, resilience, and situational judgement.
BA's online tests are adaptive — they get harder as you perform better. Don't panic when the difficulty ramps up. That means you're doing well. Practice with pilot-specific aptitude tools (COMPASS-style or Pilot Aptitude Test providers) rather than generic reasoning tests.
Waterside Assessment Day
Waterside is BA's headquarters near Heathrow. You visit twice if you make it through: once for the half-day group assessment, and again for the full assessment day. The vibe is professional but supportive — BA wants you to perform at your best, not catch you out.
Half-Day Assessment
Group Exercise: Scenario-based team task, typically involving a problem you'd face as a pilot at BA. Assessors watch how you communicate, lead without dominating, and reach decisions as a group.
Multitasking Assessment: Computer-based workload management — similar to the online tests but in a proctored, higher-stakes environment.
Full Assessment Day
Competency Interview: 45–60 minutes, STAR method. Panel assesses teamwork, decision-making, resilience, and motivation for BA specifically (not just "flying").
Technical Assessment: Written or oral assessment of aviation knowledge. Depth depends on your experience level.
Simulator Check: Currently using the A380 full flight simulator. Separate section below.
Heritage Centre Tour: BA gives successful finalists a tour as a thank-you for the effort invested in the process.
"BA goes out of their way to make you comfortable at Waterside. There are refreshments, the staff are friendly, and they genuinely want you to show your best. It's still nerve-wracking, but it doesn't feel adversarial like some other assessments." — Candidate report, BA assessment, 2025
Simulator Assessment
BA currently uses an Airbus A380 Level D full flight simulator for pilot selection — even for candidates applying to fly the A320. The session lasts approximately 90 minutes. You fly with another candidate. Failing at this stage means a 12-month freeze across all three BA airlines.
CRM and communication: How you brief, share tasks, support your sim partner, and manage crew workload. The single most important assessment criterion.
Basic handling: Departures, approaches, visual circuits. You are NOT expected to know the A380 — a thorough briefing is provided.
Workload under pressure: System failures, diversions, go-arounds. Assessors watch how you prioritise and communicate when things go wrong.
Long-haul assessment: If you applied for long-haul, suitability is assessed during this session. Limited long-haul slots means A320 short-haul may be offered instead.
The A380 feels very different from a single-aisle sim. The flight deck is enormous and the response to inputs is slower than an A320. If possible, book at least one session in a widebody simulator beforehand — even a 777 or A330 will help you adjust to the bigger feel.

Passing the assessment doesn't mean an immediate start date. Successful candidates enter BA's hold pool, where they wait for a conditional offer with a specific start date and fleet assignment.
Maximum 2 offers: You receive up to 2 job offers from the hold pool. Each offer specifies start date, fleet, and base.
Decline consequences: Declining both offers removes you from the pool. You must reapply after 12 months and complete the full selection process again.
Wait time: Varies significantly. Some candidates receive offers within weeks, others wait several months. Fleet demand and training capacity drive the timeline.
Medical & references: Pre-employment checks, background verification, and medical must be completed before your start date.
Think carefully before declining a hold pool offer. Your second decline ends your candidacy entirely. If the offered start date or fleet isn't ideal, weigh it against waiting 12+ months to restart the full process.
How to Prepare
For Online Tests
Use pilot-specific aptitude test providers, not generic IQ tests. Practice multitasking under increasing workload — that's the core skill BA tests. The Prep & Apply hub on careers.ba.com has BA-specific preparation materials. Use them.
For the Simulator
Book time in a widebody sim if possible (A380 ideal, but 777 or A330 helps with adjusting to the size). Focus on CRM, briefings, and standard calls. BA values procedural discipline and communication over raw handling. Don't go silent under pressure.
For Interviews
Prepare 5–6 STAR examples covering teamwork, pressure, failure, and leadership. Research BA specifically: fleet orders, Euroflyer launch, sustainability initiatives, customer experience focus. Have a real answer for "Why BA and not easyJet/Ryanair?" — they're a flag carrier and they care about the distinction.
